HVAC 101: How to Keep Your Bills Low and the Temperature Just Right

|

Heating and air conditioning systems, with proper maintenance, can last anywhere from 12-15 years. Despite the long life that HVAC systems can have, it can sometimes feel like they’re draining you of life with the amount of money you’re spending to keep them running.

To make sure that you beat the heat and keep costs low, here are a few great heating and air conditioning tips to help you out.

Rearrange the Furniture

It doesn’t matter if you’re using your heating or your air conditioning system. If the vents in your home are blocked by large pieces of furniture, you’re going to waste money trying to warm up those spaces. To save some money and help your HVAC unit run more efficiently, make sure there isn’t any furniture blocking air flow. It just might be time to rearrange the living room!

Invest in Insulation

Getting the air into your home is only half of the issue. The other half is making sure it stays there. Heating and air conditioning services are not going to work effectively if your home isn’t properly insulated. Without proper insulation, hot and cold air will escape through small spaces and cracks that aren’t blocked properly.

Improve Your Landscaping

A few trees can go a long way, especially during the intense summer heat. Most heat comes into a home through the roof and windows because they receive direct sunlight. If there are leafy trees shading portions of the roof and the HVAC unit, then there will be far less heat entering your home. As a result, your air conditioning unit won’t have to work so hard.

Use Your Thermostat

A thermostat does more than just control the temperature in your home. In fact, it can be the avenue to energy savings that you’ve been looking for. If you make a point to keep your thermostat lower at night and when you’re not at home, you’re bound to see some improvement in your home’s energy usage.

Running an HVAC system can get costly, but it doesn’t have to cost you everything. If you follow these tips, your HVAC system just might last longer than the average of 15 years.
