When Should I Replace My HVAC Systems?

|

As a homeowner, knowing when to replace your heating and air conditioning systems can be a delicate balance. While it may be tempting to attempt to cut costs by making frequent repairs, these costs add up. A new HVAC unit generally lasts between 12 and 15 years when properly maintained, but you should know when simple home furnace or home air conditioning repair is not enough.

Ask Yourself These Questions:

  • Is my HVAC system constantly needing repairs?
  • Are my energy bills suddenly rising without an apparent reason?
  • Is my HVAC system running more frequently than usual?
  • Have I had my air conditioning or heating system for more than 10 years?
  • Is my HVAC system no longer making my home comfortable?

If the answer to one or more of these questions is "yes," you should consider getting your system inspected by a professional. If you want to inspect either your air conditioning or heating system specifically, it is important to know the possible warning signs. Again, if you have tried home furnace or home air conditioning repair, and you are still noticing these symptoms, it is probably time for a replacement.

Signs Your Heater Needs Replacing

If you notice corrosion on the inside or water on the floor under your furnace, the heat exchanger might have holes and cracks in it. This is dangerous because the gasses inside of the furnace could potentially escape into the house, including carbon monoxide. Other signs of problems with your heat exchanger include soot around the furnace and heat registers, as well as the scent of exhaust throughout your house. Protect the people in your home by having your furnace replaced.

Signs Your Air Conditioner Needs Replacing

Failing or broken air conditioners are loud and do not cool your house well. If you notice any loud sounds that are out of the ordinary, this is likely a call for replacement. If you have been attempting to repair your air conditioner, and it is still leaving you sweating on hot summer days, it is likely time to purchase a new unit.

Being diligent in HVAC system maintenance is key to a comfortable home. If these general repairs and tune-ups are not changing anything, however, be sure to contact your local HVAC provider about selecting a new system for your home.
